B Com general course is offered to students who are interested  to pursue professional courses like M.B.A, CA, ICWAI &CS. 

B.Com (Computers)

B.Com computers is also offered to commerce students who are interested to pursue jobs related to IT and ITES.The Electives selected in Final Year are Cost Accounting and Management Accounting and Control to give a sound accounting base.Keeping in view the demand for computer science the college has increased computer sections.Regular practical sessions are conducted to develop the logical skills.

B.Sc (Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science)

With an increased demand for Maths, Stats, Computer Science combinations in the job market, this course was introduced to enable the students to take up jobs immediately after their graduation.

In Mathematics Numerical Analysis is preferred as paper-IV to increase the problem solving skills of students.

B.Sc (Biotechnology)

This course was started as it has lot of scope and plenty of opportunities  in the areas of medicine,food sciences,agriculture,ecology,genetics,bio-chemistry,immunology and others. With an idea to promote knowledge and value of basic education to train for self employement by meeting the industry requirements.The combination–Micro Biology,Bio-Tech,Chemistry was introduced in B.Sc Life Sciences.

Departments

Department of Commerce

Commerce Department came into existence in the year 1998 to cater to the needs of commerce undergraduates.
Ever since the department has grown significantly with its sincere efforts to develop & impart value based education and also to make the students competent & self-reliant.
It offers Regular & Computers in B.Com stream. The department conducts many Teacher-Student centric activities like FDP and various commerce-oriented activities.
The students are taken for Industrial visits & regular awareness sessions are conducted by Professional Institutes like Institute of Cost Accounts of India, ICSI(Institute of Company Secretaries of India) & ICAI(Institute of Chartered Accountants of India).
As part of Inter-Collegiate Program called “Medholas”—Advertising & Commerce Quiz was conducted.
The department takes pride to mention that many of our students secured 100% marks in the papers pertaining to their course.

Department of Computer Science

Computer Education was started for students of B.Com and B.Sc program from 1998-1999.It was started with a vision to impart computer education for all.
The syllabus, mode of teaching technique, exam pattern etc., are all in strict accordance with university norms. The department handles both B.Com and B.Sc Computer subjects.
In 3 years of course study, students are given intensive classroom and lab teaching using OHP and data projector. The student computer ratio is 1:1. By the time they acquire their degree, they learn two programming languages, data structures, DBMS and web programs. The lab is supported by 70 systems, divided into 3 labs.
To increase the awareness in the ever-changing computer field Seminars are conducted for students. One such seminar was “Cyber Security & Cyber Laws” where eminent speakers from Osmania University & industry participated.
Computer faculty also attended seminars & workshops conducted at Osmania University and other places in Scilab, Python etc and impart the same to the students.
As a part of Medholas Computer Science Department conducted “Memory Game”, ”PowerPoint Presentation” in various computer-related topics & in “HTML Programming” for Inter-Collegiate students.

Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics has come into existence in the year 1998 with the syllabus prescribed by the Osmania University, Hyderabad. The entire Curriculum and mode of teaching technique are framed in accordance with the Board of studies, Dept. of Mathematics, Osmania University. From the academic year 2004 onwards the Dept. of Mathematics has decided to have practical classes in mathematics. The Department of Mathematics, Osmania University wants to improve the learning processes to benefit the students so they have introduced semester system rather than with the annual system to enhance value to the students from the academic year 2016-2017 onwards.

The college has well established and spacious library with 200 no. of volumes in mathematics. We have no. of periodicals, magazines like “Mathematics today”,” Pratiyogitha Kiran”, etc

Department of Statistics

The Department of Statistics has come into existence in the year 1998 with the syllabus prescribed by the Osmania University, Hyderabad. The entire Curriculum and mode of teaching technique is formed in accordance with the Board of studies, Dept. of Statistics, Osmania University, Hyderabad.
Scope of Statistics
Statistical data and techniques of statistical analysis are immensely useful in solving economic problems such as time series, demand analysis and probability etc.
Therefore knowledge in statistics benefits the students with the necessary tools and conceptual foundations in quantitative reasoning, Economics & Management.

The college has a well established & spacious library with 200 no. of volumes in Statistics including prescribed and suggested books by Dept. of Statistics, Osmania University.

Department of Biotechnology

Bt.M.C Course was started in the year 2013-2014. The entire curriculum and mode of teaching are in strict accordance with Osmania University NOrme and Regulations.

With an idea to promote the knowledge and value of basic education to train for self-employment by meeting the industry requirements. The combination- Microbiology, Biotechnology, Chemistry was introduced in B.Sc Life Sciences.

Biotechnology is a highly interdisciplinary field that combines biological sciences with engineering technologies to manipulate living organisms and biological systems to produce products that advance healthcare, medicine, agriculture, food, pharmaceuticals and environment control.

Therefore the department intends to create awareness among students with regards to the aspects mentioned above.

 Department of English

The Department of English works with a strong conviction and spirit of creating a student-teacher centric approach. The focus is laid on the overall development and enhancement of communication skills which facilitates the grooming of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. It believes in the development of moral and ethical values through value-based education.

Most of the activities pertaining to the subject have various exercises under different headings to involve the participation of the students in acquiring a better outlook.

The Department of English strictly abides by the rules and regulations laid down by the Department of English, Osmania University, Hyderabad, with regard to the syllabus and follows the semester system under CBCS(Choice Based Credit System)pattern of teaching.

Emphasis on various activities like project works, seminars, group activities, models display is given so as to create an atmosphere of Learning through Experience.

Finally, the aim of Department is to focus on the principle of Excellence through Perfection.

Department of Second Language (Telugu)

The Department of Telugu in our college has been deep-rooted as it is not just confined to its academic syllabi but with a serious motive to inculcate and encourage the cultural and human values in the student folk. Majority of the students opt Telugu as the second language, as their mother tongue is Telugu. Therefore we groom their skills personally as well as academically. We also conduct seminars, guest lectures and literary competitions every year and give them project works and paper presentation in the classroom so as to make the student to come out with their talents of speaking skills and to outshine in their abilities apart from the prescribed core syllabus.

As a part of the departmental activity, students take part in inter colleges competitions and to “Aradhana” to know more about our rich literary and cultural writing.

The Department works with motive of “Jeevano[aadhi ki aangla bhasha-Jeevanonnatiki amma bhasha” which means “English is for our professional life & Telugu is for our virtous life”.

Smt Shyamala Devi was former Secretary of Andhra Yuvathi Mandali for nearly 49 years. She was the force behind the development of various institutions. She was instrumental in starting our Degree College and hence the college is named after her.

The College is equipped with excellent infrastructure facilities like 13 lecture halls, 5 laboratories at present. All are spacious, well ventilated and well equipped. The library is furnished with more than 2000 reference and textbooks. Our computer lab has 80 systems in all. Reserve Bank of India has donated 10 systems this year. We have LAN and Internet facilities with over 50 UPS’s.

Commerce lab and English language lab are other additions during the year. The college has the permanent affiliation from 2007-08 onwards. We are registered under 2F of the UGC Act. Nearly all the staff members are selected by duly constituted Selection Committee and approved by Osmania University.

The college is registered with Jawahar Knowledge Centers, which was started by Commissionerate of Collegiate Education to impart training to ON-JOB related skills to make the students employable. Our staff attend training courses and they, in turn, train our students.

Smt. A Shyamala Devi Degree College for Women works under the aegis of Andhra Yuvatha Mandali – a society started in the year 1935on a very auspicious day, “Vijaya Dasami”. A strong conviction of society at that time and to this day is the emancipation of women, socially and economically through education. Towards this objective Mandali diversified its activities. A Sishu Vihar was started in the year 1955, later a working women’s hostel in the year 1958, a full fledged High School in the year 1968-69, Junior College in the year 1995 and Degree college in the year 1998, MBA and Pharmacy courses in the year 2009. There is a steady increase in the strength of the college. The college has sent 12 batches of students in commerce and science so far. The current strength of the college is nearly 300 with over 87% of pass percentage.

Staff Activities

  1. Mrs. Lavanya, senior most staff member the in Department of English takes communication skills classes to JKC students and she also conducts certificate courses in communication skills.
  2. Mrs. K V Kameswari, Lecturer in Computer Science, attended the departmental conference for Under Graduate Teachers in Computer Science. She attended a workshop on Embedded Systems.
  3. Mrs. Padmasree, Lecturer in Statistics, attended a workshop at Begumpet Women’s College and also a Departmental Meeting at Osmania University.
  4. Mrs. Shalini, Lecturer in Mathematics, attended International Conference on Mathematics. She is JKC coordinator and trained students in analytical skills
  5. Our Commerce staff also attend the ed Annual Departmental Conference at Osmania University.
  6. Our Librarian, Mrs. Git Rani attend a seminar on management of Digital E-Resources at S M Vanitha Maha Vidyalaya, under Knowledge Connect for empowerment.
  7. Mrs. DVND Lakshmi, Lecturer in Telugu, attend the ed departmental conference in Osmania University.

Our Language lecturers in Telugu and Sanskrit are Doctorates. Four Commerce lecturers are MBA’s.

Saturday : 10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon

  • Internals  – College Internal Exams, UTS mid term exams.
  • Externals – University Exams both for theory and practicals.

The following rules are to be followed by the Parents/Guardians strictly

  1. The Parent/Guardians are hereby informed to take full responsibility of their wards and see that their children follow the college rules given in the college prospectus.
  2. At the time of registration of the forms, they have to submit two self addressed post cards along with the application form.
  3. At the time of admission Parent/Guardians have to provide permanent residential address and office address and phone number. In case of no phone number, any other nearest available contact number should be given for any correspondence from the college. Likewise, the Parent/Guardians should be present with their wards at the time of admission and counseling of the wards without fail.
  4. Parent/Guardians should compulsorily sign the progress report of their wards and duly sent within 2 days from the date of issue of the report.
  5. The Parent/Guardians have to attend the Parent – Lecturer meetings without fail. For the convenience of the Parent/Guardians, the college meeting will be held on every 3rd Saturday of August, November and January respectively. Therefore the Parent/Guardians should make it convenient to attend the meeting without fail to know the progress of their wards.
  6. The counseling classes will be held every month, and the students should attend the classes and discuss any problem pertaining to the college or any other personal problems.
  7. Regarding the shortage of attendance or any other matter, no complaints will be entertained at the fag end of the academic year.
  8. The Parent/Guardians are permitted to meet their children in case of emergency(only during college hours) with the prior permission of the Principal or the In-charge(in the absence of Principal). In case the Parent/Guardians are unable to come, due to any reason, brother/sister of the students may be allowed provided they get the authorization letter from the Parent/Guardians.
  9. In case of any excursion trip arranged by the college, the Parent/Guardians should personally meet the Principal to sign the ‘No objection letter’ their wards will not be permitted to go for the excursion under any circumstances.
  10. Fee Challan should be submitted after paying the fees in the college office immediately.

As a part of social responsibility, the NSS wing was started in the year 2007. We conducted winter special camp for 7 days and adopted Ratna Nagar, a slum in Barkatpura, Hyderabad.

An orientation program on “Citizen Leadership Development” was conducted by Bhoomi Organization.

A signature campaign on “Adolescent Health Clinic – Need of the Hour” was taken up with the help of Family Planning Association of India.

In 2013, January, 40 students participated in National Voters Day Rally.

We have shown the documentary on Drug Abuse, “Save Girl Child” and “How I visualize India”.

Our students have attended World Parliament on Spiritual Conference at Global Peace Auditorium, where 50 delegates from different countries have participated. Students have participated in several inter college competitions and also won prizes in many colleges.
